KADUNA — Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has said reactions from some prominent Southern Nigerians to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of military action show an inferiority complex and a lasting slave mentality toward the West. He warned that celebrating foreign pressure undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Gumi told reporters in Kaduna that when citizens applaud or back foreign threats, they betray national dignity. He said leaders and elites should reject any form of external validation that weakens local efforts to resolve domestic issues.
What Gumi warned
He argued that national problems require local responses. Instead of calling for foreign intervention, Nigerians should demand accountability from their leaders and strengthen internal institutions. Gumi stressed unity across regions as the best path forward.
“When Nigerians, especially from the South, cheer a foreign leader who threatens our sovereignty, it shows how deep the inferiority mindset has gone,” he said. “We must defend our dignity as a nation.”
Public reaction divides opinion
Responses to Gumi’s remarks were mixed. Some commentators praised his call for self-reliance and national pride. Others argued that citizens look outward only after domestic options fail. Still, many observers called the celebration of foreign threats unpatriotic.
Analysts’ view
Political analysts told reporters that the episode highlights enduring regional divisions. They urged leaders to redirect attention to concrete reforms: strengthen security, support civic institutions, and promote inclusive governance.
Why it matters
This debate is more than rhetoric. It shapes how Nigeria interacts with foreign powers and how citizens view national sovereignty. In the analysts’ view, rejecting external coercion while demanding better governance at home offers a balanced path forward.
In short: Sheikh Gumi’s comments have reignited debate about national pride, regional identity, and the role of foreign influence in Nigeria’s affairs.
