Armed bandits in large numbers launched a violent night assault on the residence of the Executive Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area, Hon. Nura Umar Abdullahi, abducting the council boss after killing three security operatives guarding the premises.
The deadly attack occurred late on Friday night, July 24, 2026, in the Zango residential area of Bungudu town. Bungudu is a major local government headquarters situated less than 20 kilometres from Gusau, the capital city of Zamfara State.
According to tactical reports released by the Joint Task Force (North West), operating under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the heavily armed assailants surrounded the official compound at approximately 11:40 p.m.. They immediately opened fire on the security detail posted at the entrance gate.
Security personnel attached to the council chairman put up a brave resistance to repel the invasion. However, the assailants, wielding high-caliber automatic rifles and tactical combat weapons, managed to overwhelm the security team through sheer numbers and superior firepower.
During the fierce exchange of gunfire, three members of the chairman’s security detail lost their lives while fighting gallantly. The fallen security team included Police Inspector Basiru Lawal, Police Constable Hamza Muhammad, and a local vigilante operative identified as Ibrahim Baare.
In addition to the deaths of the security personnel, a civilian bystander was killed in the crossfire. The chairman’s elder brother, Alhaji Bello Umar, sustained severe gunshot injuries during the chaos and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau for urgent surgical intervention.
After neutralizing the guard team, the bandits breached the inner living quarters of the compound. They seized Hon. Nura Umar Abdullahi along with five members of his immediate family, including his wife, mother, two young children, and another relative.
The armed group also forced two nearby residents into custody as they began their escape toward the dense forest corridors bordering the local government area. The abducted neighbors were identified as Halliru Soja, a staff member of the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, and Hussaini Naira, a local Point of Sale (POS) terminal operator.
Troops of the Joint Task Force Operation FANSAN YAMMA stationed at a nearby forward operating base responded swiftly after hearing the heavy gunshots echoing across Bungudu town. Military units rapidly mobilized armored vehicles and raced to intercept the fleeing bandits along their retreat route.
The responding troops engaged the bandits in an intense gun battle on the outskirts of Zango community. Under heavy military pressure, the bandits were forced to abandon five of the abducted family members in the bush to cover their own retreat.
Military forces successfully rescued the chairman’s wife, his mother, his two children, and the relative unhurt. The rescued victims were immediately brought under military protection and escorted to a safe zone for medical checks and trauma care.
Despite the rescue of his family members, Hon. Nura Umar Abdullahi remains in captivity. The bandits managed to escape with the council chairman into the deep forest enclaves connecting Bungudu to adjacent local government areas.
Community residents described the attack as a swift, highly coordinated assault. Local sources suggested that the bandits had monitored the chairman’s movements prior to launching the raid, capitalizing on the cover of darkness to launch their strike.
In the early hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026, the Theatre Command of Operation FANSAN YAMMA announced the activation of a massive joint search-and-rescue operation across the entire sector. Armed patrols and ground trackers are combing known bandit hideouts in nearby forest reserves.
The joint security task force comprises specialized infantry troops from the Nigerian Army, tactical units of the Nigeria Police Force, personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), and vetted members of local vigilante outfits. Aerial surveillance platforms have also been deployed to track movement in the dense vegetation.
Bungudu Local Government Area has experienced recurring security challenges in recent months, with rural agrarian communities facing frequent raids, cattle rustling, and kidnappings for ransom. Local leaders have repeatedly urged federal authorities to establish permanent military outposts along major transit arteries in the state.
The abduction of an executive council chairman highlights the persistent security threats facing public officials and rural populations in Zamfara State despite ongoing counter-insurgency campaigns. Security analysts emphasize the urgent need for enhanced intelligence sharing between local communities and frontline security agencies.
State government officials expressed deep condolences to the families of the slain police officers and vigilantes, praising their extraordinary sacrifice in defense of the council chairman. Government representatives assured the public that no effort will be spared in securing the safe release of Hon. Abdullahi.
