Boko Haram insurgents attacked a Nigerian Army base in Mandaragirau, Borno State, on Friday morning. Eight security personnel died in the assault. Specifically, five soldiers and three Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members lost their lives. However, troops fought back and stopped the attackers from taking the base. According to DocuNews Central, the base remains under full military control.
The fighters struck at about 3:00 a.m., using heavy rain and poor visibility as cover. Moreover, they tried to break through the base perimeter from several points. Troops of the 25 Brigade, Sector 2, under Operation HADIN KAI, responded quickly. As a result, the soldiers pushed the attackers back with fierce close-range combat.
The attack happened on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Mandaragirau. This base sits in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, north-eastern Nigeria. Specifically, it operates under 25 Brigade, Sector 2, of the Nigerian Army. According to DocuNews Central, the base serves as a front-line position that protects nearby civilian communities.

How the Attack Unfolded at FOB Mandaragirau
Heavy rainstorms hit the area on the night of June 4, going into June 5, 2026. The insurgents used this bad weather to move toward the base unseen. Furthermore, they launched the assault at exactly 0300 hours. According to DocuNews Central, community sources say the attackers operated near the base for almost one hour before troops fully responded.
Troops at FOB Mandaragirau reacted fast, however. They launched a strong counter-attack and met the insurgents head-on. Additionally, the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI provided air support during the battle. Consequently, the attackers could not break through and finally pulled back.
Several soldiers also suffered injuries during the fighting. Nevertheless, the Air Component airlifted the wounded right away. According to DocuNews Central, all injured personnel are currently in stable condition. Furthermore, some military equipment sustained damage during the intense gunfire exchange.
“Troops of Forward Operating Base Mandaragirau under 25 Brigade of Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI, successfully contained a terrorist attack in the early hours of this morning despite adverse weather conditions and poor visibility.”— Lt. Col. Haruna M. Sani, Acting Media Information Officer, Operation HADIN KAI, June 5, 2026
Military Spokesman Confirms Deaths and Battle Details
Lt. Col. Haruna M. Sani is the Acting Media Information Officer at Operation HADIN KAI. He released an official statement from Maiduguri on Friday, June 5, 2026. According to DocuNews Central, he confirmed that troops gave a fierce counter-response to the attack. Moreover, he said the battle showed the courage and strength of soldiers across the North-East.
Lt. Col. Sani also spoke about the lives lost. He stated that five soldiers died during the intense close-quarter fighting. In addition, three CJTF members fell beside the soldiers during the assault. According to DocuNews Central, Operation HADIN KAI honoured all fallen personnel for their bravery.
“Regrettably, five gallant soldiers paid the supreme price during the intense firefight. Operation HADIN KAI honours their heroism and the bravery of all personnel who stood firm in the face of a determined but ultimately futile enemy assault.”— Lt. Col. Haruna M. Sani, Operation HADIN KAI, June 5, 2026
Community Leader Says More Than One Location Was Hit
Samaila Kaigama is the President of the Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSYA). He confirmed the attack and added important details. According to DocuNews Central, Kaigama said more than one location came under attack that night. Specifically, he stated: “Yes, the attack occurred. They stormed the location and murdered many soldiers. It is not one place that was attacked.”
Therefore, the assault appeared broader than the military’s first statement suggested. Kaigama also called on the government to act. He urged authorities to build better grassroots intelligence systems. According to DocuNews Central, he said: “The government needs to create avenues for knowledgeable people to discuss security issues. Just as they created forest guards, they must create a grassroots liaison initiative. Through those people, some of these attacks can be reduced.”
Army Sends Reinforcements to Mandaragirau
Operation HADIN KAI deployed extra troops to the Mandaragirau area right after the battle. Additionally, the military sent more combat equipment to the zone. According to DocuNews Central, this move aimed to protect surrounding communities and keep pressure on the insurgents. Furthermore, clearance and exploitation operations started immediately across the surrounding area.
Troops remain in full control of FOB Mandaragirau, the military confirmed. Moreover, area domination patrols are ongoing around the base. According to DocuNews Central, Operation HADIN KAI described the failed attack as a sign of the growing desperation of terrorist groups. Specifically, the command said sustained military pressure is forcing insurgents into reckless operations.
FOB Mandaragirau Has Faced Attacks Before
This is not the first time insurgents targeted FOB Mandaragirau. In fact, on February 16, 2026, Lt. Col. OC Okolo died during a Boko Haram attack at the same base in Biu LGA. He was on duty when the attackers struck. According to DocuNews Central, the military described him as a gallant and dedicated officer.
Furthermore, in March 2026, troops repelled a separate ISWAP assault on the same base. During that battle, soldiers killed 38 insurgents. The Air Component also provided air support during that operation. Therefore, Mandaragirau has become one of the most targeted bases in the entire region.
A Year of Escalating Attacks on Borno Military Bases
The June 5 attack fits into a wider pattern of rising insurgent violence in Borno State in 2026. For example, Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and 17 soldiers died in ISWAP attacks in April 2026. Similarly, on March 1, 2026, fighters attacked a base in Mayenti, Bama LGA, killing the commanding officer. Moreover, insurgents overran a base in Kukawa LGA on March 9, 2026, burning military vehicles.
Boko Haram started its insurgency in north-eastern Nigeria in 2009. Since then, it has killed over 350,000 people. Additionally, millions more have fled their homes across the Lake Chad Basin. The group later split, and its offshoot ISWAP now runs many of the current attacks.
Operation HADIN KAI brings together troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. Its goal is to crush both Boko Haram and ISWAP in the region. According to DocuNews Central, bases like FOB Mandaragirau are crucial to this mission. However, they also remain primary targets for insurgents who want to weaken the military’s front-line reach.
Community voices continue to call for stronger civilian-military teamwork. Leaders like Samaila Kaigama argue that grassroots intelligence could prevent future attacks. According to DocuNews Central, the June 5, 2026 assault on FOB Mandaragirau shows that the fight against insurgency in Borno State is still ongoing. Nevertheless, the military has reaffirmed its full commitment to protecting the people of the North-East.
