Igbo Group Demands Probe into South Africa Xenophobic Attacks

World Igbo socio-cultural body, Ogbako Ndígbo Nile Worldwide (ONN), has strongly condemned the recurring wave of xenophobic violence, unlawful killings, intimidation, and destruction of property targeted at innocent Africans—particularly Nigerians and members of the Igbo community—in the Republic of South Africa.

In an official press statement issued from its headquarters on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the international organization called for an immediate independent international investigation to bring perpetrators of the violent attacks to justice and halt further bloodshed across South African municipalities.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the President General of Ogbako Ndígbo Nile Worldwide, Amb. Dr. Akpelu Azunna E., expressed grave concern over the perpetual loss of innocent lives and the destruction of legitimate businesses painstakingly established through years of honest labor by diaspora Africans.

According to Dr. Akpelu, every sovereign government maintains an absolute legal duty to protect all law-abiding residents within its borders, emphasizing that human life must never be sacrificed to hatred, intolerance, or xenophobic sentiment.

The President General reminded the South African leadership and the international community of the historic sacrifices made by African nations during the fight against apartheid. He highlighted that the Nigerian government and its citizens provided vital political, diplomatic, financial, and humanitarian backing to secure South Africa’s liberation.

“It is deeply painful that descendants of those who once benefited from broader African solidarity now witness fellow Africans being targeted, displaced, or killed simply because of their country of origin,” Dr. Akpelu stated.

Outlining key steps for accountability, Ogbako Ndígbo Nile Worldwide called on the South African government to institute transparent and impartial investigations into all reported incidents, arrest and prosecute offenders, strengthen local security apparatuses, and ensure full justice and compensation for victims and their families.

Furthermore, the group urged international bodies, including the United Nations, the African Union, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, to closely monitor the human rights situation. It encouraged affected African nations to explore formal legal and diplomatic channels under international law to defend their citizens abroad.

Emphasizing that violence weakens regional economic integration and undermines the foundational vision of the African Union, ONN appealed to political, religious, and community leaders across the continent to actively reject xenophobia and foster peaceful coexistence.
