Suspected kidnappers abducted six health workers in a pre‑dawn attack on a government health facility in the Oke Ijebu area of Akure. The incident unfolded around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday at the primary health centre, catching staff and patients off guard.
Attack on Health Centre
Early reports indicate that armed men, arriving in a large vehicle, forced their way onto the premises of the primary health centre. Eyewitnesses said the attackers moved swiftly to overwhelm the on‑duty staff, leaving little time for resistance.
The gunmen are reported to have rounded up health workers, including those on night duty, before loading them into a waiting vehicle. Patients described the scene as chaotic and frightening.
Immediate Security Response
Security agents from the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, quickly launched a response. Operatives carried out overnight operations in Akure South Local Government Area to locate the abducted health workers.
Amotekun officials confirmed that three of the six abducted workers were rescued during early morning efforts. These individuals were taken to a secure facility for medical evaluation.

Police Statement and Classification
The state police command described the incident as a robbery rather than a kidnapping. Police spokespersons said investigations are ongoing to clarify the circumstances of the raid and recover any remaining victims.
Community members, however, expressed concern over the violent nature of the attack and the fate of health workers who remain missing.
Impact on Health Services
Nurses and other medical staff in Ondo State have reacted strongly to the incident. Leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) threatened to suspend night duties, citing safety concerns for frontline health workers.
The association’s chairman emphasized that staff should not be required to work under conditions exposing them to violent attacks. The warning highlights growing unease among health professionals in communities experiencing insecurity.
Community Reaction
Residents in Oke Ijebu voiced alarm following the raid. Many described a sense of vulnerability and fear as details of the abduction emerged. Some called for enhanced security around public facilities to protect workers and citizens.
Family members of the abducted workers gathered near the health centre, appealing for swift action from security agencies and government officials.
National Context of Kidnapping
Kidnapping for ransom and criminal purposes remains a pervasive security challenge in Nigeria, affecting urban and rural communities alike. Research shows kidnappers now target a broad range of victims, including professionals and ordinary citizens.
Security analysts note that kidnappers often exploit gaps in law enforcement and socio‑economic pressures to conduct operations. Increasing frequency of such incidents has strained public confidence in safety measures.
Official Calls for Action
Ondo State officials have not issued a detailed public comment on the incident. Local lawmakers and civil society groups are urging heightened security protocols and accountability. They seek clear communication on rescue efforts and support for affected families.
National human rights advocates have called for systemic reforms to protect essential service workers, including health personnel, who face elevated risks in volatile environments.
Healthcare Sector Repercussions
The abduction has raised questions about the safety of medical facilities and staff, particularly during off‑peak hours. Healthcare providers are revisiting duty rosters and emergency protocols to mitigate future risks.
Observers warn that continued threats could affect service delivery, especially in underserved areas. Potential withdrawal of night shifts by nurses may exacerbate access challenges for patients requiring urgent care.
Looking Ahead
Authorities are urging calm and cooperation from the public as investigations continue. Law enforcement and security networks are coordinating efforts to secure the release of remaining abducted workers and prevent similar attacks.
The situation in Akure remains fluid as communities await updates on the missing health workers and the response from state and federal security agencies.
