FG Approves Major NYSC Reforms, Replaces Military Leadership

The Federal Government has approved a wide-ranging reform package for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking one of the most significant changes to the scheme since it was established more than five decades ago.

The decision was reached during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The reforms are aimed at modernising the NYSC, improving the welfare and security of corps members, and equipping graduates with practical skills for today’s labour market.

One of the biggest changes announced is the replacement of the military-led operational structure with a civilian administrative leadership model. Government officials explained that the transition is intended to strengthen institutional management while maintaining the discipline and core values that have long been associated with the national service programme.

As part of the overhaul, the Federal Government also approved a redesigned NYSC uniform. The new design is expected to give the scheme a refreshed identity while preserving the familiar appearance that has become synonymous with the programme over the years.

The reform package introduces a technology-driven mobilisation process to improve efficiency and transparency. Digital verification systems and enhanced call-up procedures are expected to simplify registration, reduce administrative bottlenecks and make the mobilisation process faster for prospective corps members.

Security remains a major focus of the reforms. The government said future deployments of corps members will be guided by security assessments to minimise exposure to areas facing significant security threats. The move is expected to strengthen the safety of participants while allowing national service to continue across the country.

Orientation camps will also undergo major changes. Rather than concentrating mainly on drills and routine activities, the revised programme will place greater emphasis on entrepreneurship, vocational education, innovation, digital literacy and practical skills development.

Officials believe the new curriculum will prepare graduates for self-employment and improve their chances of securing meaningful jobs after completing the one-year national service programme.

Another important aspect of the reforms is the alignment of corps members’ primary assignments with their academic qualifications, technical expertise and career interests. This approach is expected to ensure that graduates contribute more effectively to organisations while gaining valuable professional experience relevant to their fields.

The Federal Government also announced plans to improve facilities at orientation camps nationwide. Proposed upgrades include better accommodation, healthcare services, sanitation facilities and training infrastructure to create a more conducive learning environment for corps members.

In addition, the traditional passing-out parade could be replaced with a formal graduation ceremony that reflects the knowledge, skills and professional development acquired during the service year.

Officials said the reforms are designed to reposition the NYSC as a modern institution capable of meeting Nigeria’s evolving social and economic needs. While preserving its original objective of promoting national unity, the scheme will increasingly focus on innovation, digital transformation and youth empowerment.

Some of the approved reforms will require amendments to the NYSC Act before they can be fully implemented. The Federal Government is expected to forward the necessary legislative proposals to the National Assembly in the coming months.

Education experts and policy analysts have described the reform package as a major step toward making the NYSC more relevant in a rapidly changing economy. They believe the increased focus on entrepreneurship, digital skills and career development could provide lasting benefits for graduates entering Nigeria’s competitive labour market.

If fully implemented, the reforms could reshape the experience of future corps members by combining national service with practical training that supports long-term career growth and national development.
