Plateau Police Arrest Fifth Suspect in Mob Killing of UNIJOS Graduate Ibrahim Mbaya

The Plateau State Police Command has successfully apprehended the fifth suspect connected to the fatal mob attack on Ibrahim Mbaya, a 25-year-old model and graduate of the University of Jos (UNIJOS).

The suspect, identified as Yusuf Christopher Beskeni, was taken into custody following a localized manhunt. Authorities had previously declared him wanted alongside several others for their direct involvement in the extrajudicial killing that has sparked widespread outrage across the state.

Suspect Profile and Confession

During a press briefing detailing the arrest, the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, confirmed that Beskeni is currently a student enrolled in the Department of Theatre and Film Arts at the University of Jos.

While undergoing interrogation, the suspect confessed to participating in the mob violence. Furthermore, police reports indicate that Beskeni admitted to utilizing his social media platforms, specifically his WhatsApp status, to post disparaging remarks about the deceased during and after the incident.

Background of the Incident

The tragic death of Ibrahim Mbaya occurred after a crowd accused him of stealing a mobile phone. Rather than turning him over to law enforcement, the mob resorted to vigilante action, brutally assaulting the young graduate until he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators initially identified up to six primary actors who actively orchestrated and participated in the torture. The arrest of Beskeni brings the total number of individuals in police custody regarding this case to five, marking a significant step toward concluding the preliminary investigation.

Ongoing Pursuit of Justice

The Plateau State Police Command has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on jungle justice and vigilante violence. The remaining suspect implicated in the attack is still at large, and tactical teams continue to gather intelligence to secure their apprehension.

All five suspects currently in custody are expected to be formally charged and prosecuted once the investigative dossier is finalized and handed over to the state’s prosecuting authorities.
