At least 30 killed after armed bandits attacked travellers in Zamfara

In Zamfara Bandit Attack At least 30 people were killed after suspected armed bandits launched a deadly ambush on travellers along the Magami–Dansadau highway in Zamfara State. The attack happened on Sunday evening and targeted a convoy moving through one of the state’s most dangerous transport corridors.

According to DocuNews Central, multiple local security sources confirmed that the attackers opened fire directly on civilian vehicles and escort teams. As a result, dozens of passengers were trapped, while several others sustained injuries during the coordinated assault.

The incident occurred on May 10, 2026, along the Magami–Dansadau Highway in northwestern Nigeria. The route links rural communities to Gusau, the state capital, and has repeatedly been identified as a major banditry hotspot.

Initial reports showed that 21 civilians died at the scene. In addition, eight local hunters and one member of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard were also killed during the confrontation.

Local officials later confirmed that several suspected bandits were neutralized during the exchange. However, no official casualty figure has been released for the attackers.

Residents described the attack as one of the deadliest highway assaults recorded in Zamfara this year. Moreover, they said fear has returned to communities already struggling with repeated violence.

The Magami–Dansadau road has remained a high-risk route for years. Therefore, many travellers now wait for military or community escort before using the highway.

According to local transport operators, traffic on the corridor dropped sharply after news of the ambush spread. Several commercial drivers also suspended trips along the road on Monday morning.

Medical workers in nearby health facilities confirmed receiving multiple victims. While some injured survivors were treated locally, critical cases were referred to hospitals in Gusau.

Security teams later moved the bodies from the scene. Afterwards, relatives began identifying victims for burial.

The Zamfara State government had not issued a formal public statement at the time this report was published. Nevertheless, local authorities said additional patrol teams were deployed to the area.

Bandit attacks continue to threaten daily life across northwestern Nigeria. In recent years, armed groups have repeatedly targeted villages, farms, schools, and highways for kidnappings and killings.

Security analysts say major transport roads are now frequent targets because they provide access to large numbers of civilians. As a result, road travel across several northern states remains highly risky.

In December 2025, the same highway recorded a deadly improvised explosive device attack. That earlier incident reinforced concerns about worsening insecurity along the corridor.

Residents of Magami and Dansadau have repeatedly called for stronger military presence. They argue that regular checkpoints alone have not prevented repeated ambushes.

Community leaders also urged the federal government to improve intelligence gathering. In addition, they requested more surveillance operations around known forest hideouts.
