A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon after a three-storey building under construction collapsed along Dr. Peter Odili Road in the Trans Amadi area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, leaving at least 11 people feared trapped beneath the rubble.

The building, reportedly located behind an Eterna filling station and opposite Chief Sam Ngbor Avenue, suddenly gave way while construction activities were ongoing. The collapse sent shockwaves through the busy neighbourhood, drawing residents, motorists, and traders to the scene.

Eyewitnesses said a loud crashing sound was heard moments before the structure came down, creating panic among people in the area. Several workers who were reportedly inside the building at the time are believed to be trapped under the debris.

Still A Developing Story

As of the time of this report, authorities have not confirmed whether there have been fatalities or injuries among the trapped individuals. However, fears remain high because several of those trapped are believed to be construction workers who were inside the building when it collapsed.

The incident has once again raised concerns about building safety standards and the enforcement of construction regulations in Nigeria. Experts have repeatedly warned against the use of substandard materials, poor supervision, and violations of approved building plans, all of which have been linked to previous building collapse incidents across the country.
