A student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) was shot dead after armed gunmen attacked a vehicle near the institution’s main gate in Benin City, Edo State. Two other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack but suffered injuries.

According to DocuNews Central, the attack happened on Sunday night near the Ugbowo main gate of the university. Witnesses said the attackers opened fire at close range before fleeing the area.

The incident occurred on May 10, 2026, at the University of Benin main gate in Ugbowo, Benin City, Edo State. Security operatives later moved in and secured the scene.

Student Shot Inside Vehicle Near UNIBEN Gate

Eyewitnesses said the victim was inside a Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV when another vehicle blocked his path close to the university entrance. Moments later, masked gunmen reportedly stepped out and fired multiple shots.

The victim died inside the vehicle before help could arrive. Photos and videos from the scene showed visible bullet damage on the vehicle.

Two other people inside the same vehicle were injured during the shooting. Both victims were taken to the University of Benin Health Centre for urgent medical attention.

Victim Had Just Finished Examination

Initial reports indicate that the student had completed an academic examination shortly before the attack. Sources within the university community said he had reportedly left the campus after finishing a Political Science examination.

However, authorities have not officially released the identity of the deceased. Family notification is believed to be ongoing.

As a result, university students expressed fear following the shooting. Many described the attack as shocking because it happened close to a major entrance used daily by staff and students.

Police Begin Investigation

Officers from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters responded after receiving distress calls. They evacuated the victim’s body and began preliminary investigations.

Police officials said investigations are ongoing. No arrests had been announced as of the time of filing this report.

The Divisional Police Officer reportedly described the situation as “still sketchy,” indicating investigators were gathering more evidence.
