Remi Tinubu Advises Nigerians to Start Akara Business, Faces Criticism After SUV Donation to APC Women Leaders

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has come under intense public scrutiny following remarks encouraging Nigerians to consider small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn, and kuli-kuli as a means of earning a living. The comments have sparked debate, especially after her earlier donation of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to women leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in opposition-controlled states.
Speaking after the Renewed Hope Initiative’s second-quarter meeting with the wives of state governors, Mrs. Tinubu explained that many small businesses require little capital to start. She said beneficiaries of her initiative received grants—not loans—to help them become self-reliant.
«”To start akara business doesn’t take a lot of money. To start roasting corn or kuli-kuli doesn’t take much,” she said while explaining the purpose of the grants.»
However, the remarks quickly generated widespread reactions on social media. Many Nigerians argued that while small businesses are important, government officials should focus more on creating jobs, improving the economy, and addressing the rising cost of living. Others defended the First Lady, saying her comments were meant to encourage entrepreneurship rather than diminish the country’s economic challenges.
The controversy was further fueled by reports that Mrs. Tinubu had earlier donated brand-new SUVs to APC women leaders in five opposition-controlled states—Abia, Anambra, Bauchi, Osun, and Oyo. According to the First Lady, the vehicles were personal gifts to the beneficiaries and not party property.

Critics questioned the contrast between encouraging ordinary Nigerians to engage in low-capital businesses while political party leaders received expensive vehicles. Supporters, however, maintained that the vehicle donation was a separate political gesture and should not be linked to the entrepreneurship grants.
The discussion has continued to dominate public conversations online, with many Nigerians expressing differing opinions about the government’s economic messaging and empowerment initiatives.
As reactions continue, the episode has once again highlighted the growing public sensitivity to statements by government officials amid Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
