175 ISIS Fighters Killed in Nigeria-US Counterterror Raid. Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters Confirmed that 175 ISIS-linked fighters were killed during ongoing joint counterterrorism operations involving Nigerian troops and the United States Africa Command, also known as AFRICOM.

The operation targeted Islamic State fighters and affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province positions in North-East Nigeria. Military officials said the coordinated air and ground assaults destroyed multiple insurgent assets and disrupted active terrorist networks.

On May 19, 2026, in North-East Nigeria, primarily around the Lake Chad Basin and Metele axis in Borno State, security forces intensified operations against ISIS-linked militants following days of coordinated military action.

What Happened?

According to the Defence Headquarters, the joint operation resulted in the elimination of 175 ISIS fighters from the battlefield. Officials said the attacks focused on identified militant positions after intelligence confirmed active terrorist movement in the region.

Military authorities added that several strategic targets were destroyed. These included weapons storage sites, logistics hubs, communication points, and supply routes used by insurgent groups operating in the North-East.

The operation followed earlier strikes carried out on May 16 and May 17. Those missions targeted senior ISIS leadership and additional militant formations.

Where Did It Happen?

The military operation took place in North-East Nigeria, with key action reported around Metele in Borno State and the wider Lake Chad Basin.

The Lake Chad Basin remains one of the most active conflict zones in West Africa. The area borders Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. Because of its difficult terrain, insurgent groups have used it for years as a major operational base.

Security analysts say the region continues to serve as a critical safe haven for extremist groups. Therefore, sustained pressure remains necessary.

Who Is Involved?

The Nigerian Armed Forces led the operation with support from the United States Africa Command.

AFRICOM confirmed it coordinated targeted strikes against ISIS militants in northeastern Nigeria. It also stated that no American or Nigerian personnel were injured during the operation.

According to Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, issued the official operational update.

Senior ISIS Figures Reportedly Killed

The Defence Headquarters said the wider offensive also removed several senior ISIS-linked commanders.

Among them was Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, identified by U.S. officials as a major ISIS global operations figure. Nigerian and U.S. authorities said he was killed during an earlier phase of the mission.

Officials also named Abd-al Wahhab, Abu Musa al-Mangawi, and Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir among those reportedly eliminated.

AFRICOM Commander General Dagvin Anderson said the operation reflected the strength of the security partnership between Nigeria and the United States.

He stated that the removal of the targeted militants would reduce ISIS’s ability to plan attacks against both regional and international interests.

According to DocuNews Central, the operation marks one of the most significant publicly acknowledged joint Nigeria-U.S. counterterror actions in recent years.

Military Strategy and Regional Impact

Security experts say recent operations suggest stronger intelligence coordination between Nigerian forces and U.S. military planners.

This partnership has increasingly focused on targeted strikes, surveillance support, and rapid-response operations.

As a result, military officials believe these actions can weaken insurgent command structures and reduce their operational capacity.

However, analysts also warn that militant groups often attempt regrouping after major losses. Therefore, sustained operations remain essential.

Background on ISIS Activity in Nigeria

ISIS-linked groups, especially ISWAP, have operated in North-East Nigeria for years.

They have carried out repeated attacks on military positions, civilian communities, and infrastructure.

Although Nigerian forces have recorded major successes, security challenges continue across parts of Borno and neighboring states.
